Monologue: Bill's Back!

Bill reflects on his Covid-19 diagnosis and recaps the top issues of the week in his Real Time monologue.

Bob Costas: Back on the Record

Sportscasting legend Bob Costas joins Bill to discuss the IOC's controversial decision to move forward with the Tokyo Olympics and its cozy relationship with authoritarian regimes.

Panel: The GOP's Slow-Moving Coup

James Carville and Nicholas Kristof join Bill to discuss Republican efforts to control the outcome of future elections.

New Rule: The Fault in Our Stars

In his editorial New Rule, Bill tells celebrities running for office: "You’re not good enough. You’re not smart enough. And doggone it, it completely doesn’t matter that people like you."

Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the the entire interview with Bob Costas (7:27) and panel discussion with Democratic strategist James Carville and NY Times columnist Nicholas Kristof (21:02), Bill's "funny bit" (34:57) and complete New Rules (46:47). It won't last long, as usual:

Just because someone has a familiar name, from movies or TV, does not mean that they have the knowledge or experience to run for public office. We should have learned that from the former guy. People may have heard of him since he came from a wealthy family and had been on a TV show. But we know now that he didn't even do all that well in school, let alone had the experience or the temperament to lead the country - besides, as we know now, he had an ulterior motive, he hoped to make money off the exposure.

And the individuals that Bill named may not be planning to fleece the country, but what possible qualifications do they have? All of our recent Democratic presidents had previous government experience and excelled in important and relevant ways. Jimmy Carter was an Annapolis graduate, a nuclear physicist who had a brilliant career in the U.S. Navy. Bill Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar and Barack Obama was a Constitutional Scholar. And then there's Joe Biden who not only served for decades in the Senate, but followed that by eight successful years in the Executive Branch.

And I really liked Bill's riff on Al Franken (Stuart Smalley): "You’re not good enough. You’re not smart enough. And doggone it, it completely doesn’t matter that people like you."

Not only was it a good show, but the "copy" I included was a reliable one and seems to have stuck around for awhile (the second one, anyway ). And my favorite part this week was New Rules, not only is that an excellent point, but I particularly appreciated the Al Franken (Stuart Smalley) reference.

win in 2020 was to have a beloved celebrity run, like Oprah or Tom Hanks or Michelle Obama. That they'd lose with an actual seasoned professional. No, Democrats aren't that stupid. When celebrities like Hillary Clinton and Al Franken became senators, they worked hard doing the job and weren't interested in media attention.

The idea that outsiders would be good at public office because they're pure and everybody in politics is corrupt is stupid. Thank you, Bill!

I only include one of these if I can find a recording that's complete and watchable and this was a good one - as was this week's show. Good guests and I particularly liked this week's New Rules!

..to vote "fuck you" than "thank you."

Especially Repubs who seem to mainly want lower taxes and a way to hurt any progressive cause, even if it hurts them!

And here I was focusing on his Stuart Smalley quote... Bill really nailed it this week despite (or maybe because of) being forced to take a hiatus for the past 2 weeks...

Bill had pissed me off so badly!

But I watched the clips you posted and was very encouraged that he's funny once again without being terribly antagonistic toward more liberal causes (re: his "f" politically correct anything).

I even watched the whole show rerun on HBO...it was that good & I wanted my hubby to see it!

Thanks again, Rhiannon. 🙏
