Just my humble opinion.

(38,449 posts)...Nixon tried to run for governor later, but he lost again. Then in 1968 Nixon won and he won again in 72. Never underestimate a powerful young leader.
......And Beto is will be one of our future leaders..That is my opinion..

(34,195 posts)You think he's got the 'smarts' of Nixon?
Well, Beto was smart enough to drop out of the 2020 race in 2019.
O'Rourke announced the end of his campaign for president on November 1, 2019.
His ship has sailed.

(5,901 posts)His only loss in a general election was to Ted Cruz in the Texas Senate rate in 2018 -- by 2.5 points -- and that's an easy steal the vote percentage for Texas Republicans. A Democrat has to win by an overwhelming vote to actually be declared winner.
Everybody in Texas knows that Beto actually outperformed and earned more votes than Cruz; the 2.5% gave it away. Democrats usually lose 20+%.
And he'll run against Abbott for Governor next year and win. People can't stand Abbott outside of evangelical nuts. We froze for 10 days in February because of Abbott incompetence. Our pipes burst; our ceilings caved in; people died.
GO BETO!

(823 posts)However, he will not win statewide election in Texas. He committed the ultimate sin that may have cost him the senate seat. He said he wanted to forcefully buy back AR 15's in Texas. That stalled him in Texas. With that simple statement he was turned into a bumper sticker: "Come and Take It". If you think Texas is swinging left any time soon you have another think coming. I wish he could attain the governorship in Texas, but that is not to be. I do not in any way disagree with what he says about assault weapons, but it won't fly here in Texas. You can say he wants to run a mandatory buy back of assault weapons and that is not confiscation, but the effect is the same and the difference is dollars or no dollars. If he runs for governor he will be hit with this over and over and over and it won't matter what else he says. I have been in central Texas 30 years now, you can talk about change all you want, but damn, it is still a long way off.

Some were smiling a little, others had a 'I can't believe said that' look.
