They picked up the freshly severed heads and examined them for signs of cognitive function. They concluded there was a brief time when the head was still conscious.

and his experience witnessing such an execution. As I recall, he described quite vividly the look on the poor bastard's face in the seconds before all the blood drained from his brain and he lost consciousness.

Horrible.

I think everyone should have a scan done to ensure no consciousness present any longer before any autopsies!

No breathing, no heartbeat - technically "dead" - but their cells were still alive. Including those in the brain. And then they were brought back within the parameters of living b/c their heart was restarted.

To quote a certain fictional character played by the wonderful Billy Crystal:

Miracle Max : "Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive."
