Though he remained allied with the Republican Party, Mr Lincoln ran as the National Union candidate both because there were some major Republican leaders who opposed his re-nomination, and because Mr Lincoln wished to appeal to a bi-partisan coalition, so he might effect a more evenhanded Reconstruction.

The world is infinitely more complex, and history far less rigid, than is readily admitted to by those with simple minds.

The graves of plantation slaves have recently been rediscovered. I wonder how the university has honored them?
