(45,541 posts)they love having low income service workers who are required to be polite in hopes they won't lose tip money. Lower tips can easily stop them from being able to fully pay their rent or daycare bills that month, let alone groceries or health care.

(2,575 posts)that reason. I have been shocked that tipped workers want to keep it, most never having had a fully benefited job, do not know the long term consequences of serving for gratuities only.
There are so many negatives for tipped workers, such as employer theft of the tip money, the fact that some people do not tip, (I hate the practice but tip at 20%). And while multimillionaires can avoid taxes, the IRS targets tipped workers for audits.

(41,177 posts)- Herman Caine's Enduring Lobbying Triumph Has Kept Restaurant Workers Poor for Decades, $2.13, (MoJo, 2020)

In 1996, former Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman Cain, who was then head of the National Restaurant Association, helped convince a Republican-led Congress to decouple the two wages. The tipped minimum has been stuck at $2.13 ever since...

(2,575 posts)There are other examples, Sowell, Carson, etc. Hard to respect such capitulation, but in reality while those are used to diss POC for betrayal. Are we to believe that these examples legitimize the exploitation?
Conservatives, in the U.S. it means Republican, want a grossly underpaid and subservient, near starving, servant class.

(36,137 posts)offering only $11.25 an hour. A lot of sweeping goin' on. Haven't been in one in at least 10-15 years, but saw that austerity beat down seems to have had a sad effect on wait staff, who showed forced cheer and sharp vigilance with customers while cooks showed surly boredom. In the GA one, some rotund redneck walked in talking loud about Holocaust numbers. I quickly ate, left a 50% tip and exited. I could be wrong about the air of those places and not know the local temperatment, but it will be a long time before I go into another.
