1,000 counties in the U.S. have Covid vaccination coverage of less than 30%, CDC says
PUBLISHED THU, JUL 1 20212:39 PM EDTUPDATED THU, JUL 1 20214:15 PM EDT
KEY POINTS
-About 1,000 counties in the United States have vaccination coverage of less than 30%, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said.
-The more transmissible delta variant currently makes up about 25% of sequenced new cases in the U.S.
-In some counties, delta variant rates are as high as 50%.
Snip...
Zip codes with the highest rates of vaccine hesitancy are located in states such as North Dakota, Idaho and Alabama, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, an independent global health research center at the University of Washington.
During the briefing, Dr. Anthony Fauci, medical advisor to the president, cited a study in The Lancet that showed mRNA vaccines had about 80% effectiveness against confirmed delta variant infection. The study also indicated that two doses of an AstraZeneca vaccine provided 60% protection.
As for symptomatic disease, another study cited by Fauci showed that two doses of the Pfizer vaccine generated 88% protection against the delta variant. A study from Public Health England demonstrated that the Pfizer vaccines offered 96% protection against hospitalization with the delta variant, and the AstraZeneca vaccine offered 92% efficacy after two doses.
Preliminary data over the last six months suggest 99.5% of deaths from Covid-19 in the states have occurred in unvaccinated people ... the suffering and loss we are now seeing is nearly entirely avoidable, Walensky said.

(205,664 posts)My New York county is currently at 63% vaccinated which isn't great, but I was astounded to see even lower rates in other New York counties - especially since the vaccine is now readily available in these parts, many sites are now taking walk-ins.
This is the map that I've been checking, it gives vaccination rates in states and counties and is updated daily:

(205,664 posts)It's incredibly frustrating hearing the crazy beliefs and the excuses - people are dying, what does it take?! I got vaccinated as soon as I could get an appointment. It seemed like it took forever for it to be available in this area and for me to qualify, but I've been fully vaccinated since the end of March - got an appointment at the CVS in a nearby city. But now it's available in local pharmacies, pharmacies in groceries, Walmart, a large state run site in the old Sears store at the nearby local mall (which has neon signs and arrows that nobody can miss!) and most have signs that say they take walk-ins. So what does it take?!

(22,706 posts)I had a boss once who used to say, "The masses are asses." I used to think that it was a harsh and rude thing to say but now as my inner Pollyanna withers and dies I'm almost in complete agreement with him now.
I'm sure disappointed in "my fellow man." I too had to wait for my first dose as I was in the third cohort in my state so I was sweating it. Then, thankfully, the option opened up for all adults. Even then I had to wait for an appointment and had to wait again when the J & J was put on hold.
Thankfully, I was able to schedule for the Moderna and I really feel like it was divine providence the way it all finally happened. I couldn't be happier on that front but this hesitancy thing's really frustrating and especially disappointing.
The stupidity is not a really big surprise but the apparent selfishness and disregard for the health and welfare of others has been a real eye opener. That's what I get for being an INFJ, I reckon. I know one thing, I'll never again be blinded by a faith in humanity, unfortunately.

(205,664 posts)To see if there was anywhere in this hemisphere to get it. I'm in Northeastern New York and the only places in the state were a site in New York City and another at the completely other side of the state - my friend who teaches drove all the way there - twice! And then it was available to front line workers, my friend who works in the local hospital ER with psychiatric patients was able to get it - but she had to drive downstate to a major hospital to get the Pfizer.
When I was told that the Moderna was available at CVS locally, I was ready to get it, but I couldn't get an appointment nearby, they filled up so fast, and I was told it was crowded. But I was more than happy to go where I went, they were efficient, I had no wait, and I was out in 20 minutes (counting the 15 minute post vaccine wait).
But now that it's available everywhere around here, all you have to do is walk in - and there are neon signs advertising it - there are people who still haven't gotten it?! I really don't get it.

(14,855 posts)The interactive map doesn't seem to work by zip code yet, at least not for me on this smart phone.
I noticed extremely low vaccination rates, in the single digits, for "college towns" awhile back. Not on the campus, but for the populations outside of the campuses (but within the same zip code).
I'm still not sure what to make if it. I HOPE it's because those populations typically include mostly students renting apartments off-campus. If such rentals have mostly been empty recently, with their typical student tenants getting vaccinated elsewhere, then that might explain their horrible percentages.
For example, only about 7% have been vaccinated outside of Ohio State and 3% outside of the Indiana University campus!

(14,855 posts)It's the zip code map from IMHE that doesn't seem to be working yet.
Maybe they don't have all the data yet?
A Columbus OH news story recently showed a shocking range of vaccination rates, by zip code, within Franklin County OH from 7% to 82%! It was the zip code for Ohio State University that was only 7%, and the total population was listed as something like 12,000. Yet the student body at that school is over 60,000, so that population obviously wasn't for the campus itself.
Then I couldn't find any such zip code break-downs for my county in Ohio, or any others. So I wonder if many county health agencies haven't done it yet?

(205,664 posts)It took me a bit to find exactly where I am, LOL, since zip codes are much smaller areas than counties, but it does work.

(14,855 posts)Need to try with my PC too. Maybe this smart phone can't handle that detail?

(14,855 posts)I'll try it again, though, because I didn't first select a state when I used it.
The biggest zip code areas in Ohio, which I assume means they're very rural to be so big, tend to be the reddest (higher hesitancy) ones. Ugh.
Edit: Seems to be a smart phone problem. Just won't let me do it by zip codes.
Rhiannon12866
(205,664 posts)So it took me a bit to find my exact one. And this is a fairly rural area, we've only had a separate zip code since the mid '90s.

(14,855 posts)Without outlines of the counties in the zip code map, I wasn't even looking in the right area at first! Finally moved the mouse pointer much farther North, and then recognized the nearby zip codes finally.
My zip code is one of the better ones around here, at least.
Rhiannon12866
(205,664 posts)It took me a bit as well, since it's tough to find on a map without labels, LOL. And my zip code is somewhat hesitant, too, though in better shape than the more rural areas to the north. And I know they have the vaccine there, I've made made the effort to point it out to people I know from "up North." *sigh*

(22,706 posts)Sorry if you are unable to get it to work for you but the NY Times link is good if you don't get a paywall. I wish I could be more help.

Cool! Thanks!
