(45,442 posts)We can't afford to keep buying new stuff and dumping more in landfills. Most things should require just a few replacement parts to keep on working.

(11,563 posts)Our pretty new fridge, for example. I like everything about it, other than the fact that water from the defrost cycle pools in the bottom of the bottom-mount freezer, freezes, and at a future point, allows the defrost water to pour out onto the hardwood. The ice has to be cleared from the bottom at least once a week.
Naturally, it's because of the drain being plugged, probably by ice. The last fridge had that problem, so I did a little dismantling, wrapped the little heater that powers the defrost with a coiled piece of bare #12 wire and poked the free end down into the drain. Worked a treat.
I imagined doing the same to the new fridge, but I absolutely CANNOT find the drain. It is behind the moulded plastic that forms the fridge's interior. Just fantastic engineering.

(14,751 posts)Just look at tesla. If you buy a car from them, you own the hardware but not the software. If you sell the car, the license is not transferable and they will brick the vehicle as soon as they find out.
You can't even charge it. It won't run.
The new owner needs to buy a license for the features they want to use ($$$$$).
You can't modify it. You can't load your own. Nobody but tesla can service it.
And this is coming to everything from appliances to power tools. It's nonsense.
It's not just parts and tools. It gets to the core of owning something.
