"I'm so sorry that I made the mistake to not get vaccinated. Vaccinations are so important, and I can do better as a parent, as a human, and I hope to god everybody else can, too."
Travis Campbell, who is in the hospital with Covid-19, says he regrets not taking the vaccine.

He's not evil. He's a human being who made a horrible mistake, who recognizes that mistake, and is trying to prevent other people from making the same mistake he made.

(28,979 posts)Their mistakes killed many others who can never come to their senses. Hard to feel sympathy at those who mocked, sneered, and ridiculed others. How many do you know that have contracted Covid due to the obstinance of people like this man who regrets his "mistakes" now? I have friends and relatives who spent time ICU, some barely pulling through thanks to folks with that guy's attitude. Many were infected by their own Covid carrying relatives. Wonder how many this guy passed it on to?

(8,207 posts)If a person isn't a sociopath--if a person not only acknowledges what they did wrong but also does whatever is in their power to make it right and is welcomed back into the community--I think that is a far better outcome than having the wronged majority forever mock, ostracize and gleefully celebrate the person's suffering.
And I walk that walk. Years ago, I wrote an op-ed against the death penalty, citing my own experience as a rape survivor who talked someone out of harming the perpetrator, and who felt saddened by the perpetrator's death at a young age. When my purse was snatched, I wrote to the prosecutor asking that the young man not be sentenced to jail time. I later bumped into him when I was knocking doors for a political campaign, told him I recognized him as the person who stole my purse. "That was you?" he said. "I'm sorry. Thank you for your letter. It kept me out of jail. Since then, I've broken from my friends and started taking classes at the community college."
As far as knowing people with Covid, I can look out my window and see two households where people caught it--one a health care worker and another a corrections officer. The tenant upstairs from my office caught it working in a restaurant. I know many others. Almost 13% of the residents of the city where I live have caught it. I know three that were hospitalized but recovered and two that died.

(115,858 posts)mostly GOP politicians and media talking heads, when they get it: the people who actually knew better but were motivated by politics. Those are the miscreants who deliberately misled people like the man in the OP, and if they get the bug my sympathy is, shall we say, strained.

And so I face the final curtain
No masks, no distancing, and no vaccine
Now Im a burden
I've lived a life of bull
Never wore seatbelts, on any highway
A bore, a right wing whore
I did it their way
COVIDS, just like the flu
And I am sure, Faucis invention
Wont do, what Im told to do
So bring it on, viral infection
I let them chart my course
Plan all my steps, along the dieway
A bore, a whore like this
I did it their way

I am likewise sick of these people. They do not deserve any media attention whatsoever.
