Should Doctors Prescribing Livestock Medicine For Covid Face Consequences? - All In - MSNBC

“While we all debate how disinformation should be regulated and what tech companies should do, one question I have not heard a good answer to is this: Shouldn't the medical profession be policing its own? What are the consequences for doctors pushing snake oil solutions?” says Chris Hayes. Aired on 08/31/2021.

2. True, but these charlatans are prescribing something not fit for humans which sends them to

Poison control centers during a pandemic. And it can have lethal aftereffects. Not to mention that horse dewormer does nothing to protect them from Covid. And the vaccine is free!

4. I agree. But think it will be hard to revoke their license or prevail

in a law suit. The drug does have some use for humans, but no proof it helps with COVID. That muddies the water.

13. How does that muddie the water?

The manufacturers of Ivermectin have stated in no uncertain terms not to use this for anything other than its intended use. The drug helps humans with a parasitic infection and covid is not a parasite.

15. Apparently, you are not familiar with Off-Label prescribing. That's why it muddies the waters.

"Off-label drug use involves prescribing medications for indications, or using a dosage or dosage form, that have not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Since the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the practice of medicine, OLDU has become common."

Thanks for asking.

They don't know the difference. Ivermectic is a dewormer. Bait shop sell worms.

If it was posted on the internet that dog poop works for Covid. They would probably take it.

6. Maybe if someone would tell EVERYBODY that Ivermectin does have indicated uses in humans

As a physician, I have prescribed this med for both scabies and lice. It is prescribed for certain roundworm infections, including strongyloides and ascariasis, as well as other off-label uses.

I don’t think it is fair to frame this as doctors pushing livestock medicine. I also wouldn’t go so far as to call it snake oil, as folks are in fact studying whether there are anti-viral effects of ivermectin, and there is some supportive data.

However, I think it’s pretty irresponsible for people to be able to pick up such medications without a veterinary prescription.

That being said, I feel the profession should and generally does police itself, we hold ourselves to incredibly high standards and are always at risk of losing our license if we are practicing inappropriately.

7. Oh, I'm aware of that, but these people are mostly picking it up at stores that cater to livestock

I saw a news report over the weekend where an owner of one of these stores saying that he couldn't keep it in stock for those who needed it for their cows, sheep and horses. And what about the dosage? No one can possibly weigh as much as a horse, no wonder these people are ending up at poison control centers. And I can't imagine any real physician prescribing ivermectin to prevent Covid - and I'm including veterinarians.
