(204,779 posts)I hope that they continue the mask mandates when schools open next month here in New York. They were in effect last year, I saw even the youngest kids still wearing masks when they got off the school buses. Yet there still were several Covid outbreaks locally, both in the high school and elementary, causing shutdowns. I sure hope that the high school and junior high students got fully vaccinated, let alone teachers and staff.

Children, you know, die every day, dont they? And now their deaths will be folded into the everyday routine events at hospitals across the country.
Seriously, America, is this what youve become? This poor kid, the first at Seattles Childrens, caught the disease from someone else. Maybe from a family member who caught it from a friend or from an elderly relative. Maybe from an anti-vax fool or, perhaps, from someone whod been vaccinated but carried the disease asymptomatically. This is the mess were all in today because of a disease left unhampered in its progress, in its mutation fecundity, because so many of us simply refuse to take precautions of any sort. This is the mess caused by patriotic Americans who gather in close places and breathe and sweat on each other, spittle spraying the air in a laugh, enjoying their freedom to kill at a distance, to snuff out lives of people they dont know and will never see. And its not just the half a million Harley fools who gathered in Sturgis. Its all people who joined crowds everywhere, unmasked because its a party, right, boss? And at parties we just let it all out and celebrate life, right?
And so we have Delta and many other variants as the virus mutates. In most cases, it seems, the variants (Delta aside) do not possess increased virulence; but in one or two, the mutation may add to its potency, to its lethality. Delta seems to attack younger people -- and it kills children. Maybe the next one will be 1,000 times as lethal as the Delta variant which, its been said, is 1,000 times more lethal than the original. And maybe that next one will leap over of the ability of the current crop of vaccines to ameliorate its effects. The sky is the limit and the first child to die may soon become just a landmark, ultimately something for the thinned ranks of survivors to look back on sadly in despair.
Apologies in advance for the rant. I genuinely fear for the future, for my children and grandson, and all the couples and children who have been rendered vulnerable to an increasingly deadly disease by an increasingly vocal and violent army of patriots who would rather beat a doctor to the ground than take a vaccine that can stop this killing disease, but only if everyone -- even those whom Trae Crowder refers to as rock chewing stupid -- takes measures to fight it and kill it.
