Since gestation is easier to count from the last day of the last menstrual period, it actually tacks two weeks onto fetus gestational age, since ovulation occurs mid cycle two weeks later.

So, if your last period ended Sept 1st, you will ovulate around 9/15, at which point you can become pregnant. You don’t have your period at the end of September, and by the time you’re two weeks late on 10/15, though you became pregnant 4 weeks prior, OB math starts the clock on 9/1, hence 6 weeks pregnant.
