(205,161 posts)School just started in my county on Thursday and as of Saturday there have been 7 new Covid cases resulting in quarantines in 3 local school districts. We have the vaccines this year - and those 12-and-over are eligible - but it already sounds like a repeat of last year.

Meanwhile, as of 9/9, Dr. Ding has stated now 1 in 7 kids will suffer with long haul.
He is also reporting people with even mild cases are at much higher risk to need dialysis!
I canmot wrap my head around sending kids to school during this deadly pandemic, especially without a very strictly enforced mask mandate.
The flu is another respiratory virus. What happens every year when schools reconvene?
It sure doesn't seem like rocket science to me. 😏
Poor kids!

(205,161 posts)But I looked up the school that I went to and there's a mask mandate in place again this year. It applies to in the school and on school buses, the only change is that masks are no longer required for outdoor activities. And that's good news, but I mentioned that the mask mandate here in New York to enter any store or business was rescinded at the beginning of July - just in time for tourist season, and Delta. The tourists usually clear out after Labor Day, but there was a big car show this past week and apparently the annual motorcycle rally which was canceled for June might be rescheduled for this fall. They are apparently trying to make up for last year when everything was closed down.

There is one here as well & both staff & students regularly ignore it! With a + test rate here of almost 26%!
And, I'm sorry to say the direct flights to NYC that were stopped last year due to the pandemic are resuming. Like the pandemic is over?
Given that the brain's primary function is to keep people (and other species) alive, it is glaringly obvious that a significant minority of people's cognitive function is maladaptive.
Stay safe, my friend.
On edit: link to news about flights resuming.

(205,161 posts)And I have no doubt that the school mask mandate is enforced, it was in place all last year (I'd see even the little kids getting off the bus, still wearing masks) so the kids are used to it. I just wonder if all the teachers and staff are vaccinated, as far as I know the vaccine isn't mandated. I have one friend who teaches who drove to the other side of the state to get the vaccine before it was available here in the East. But that's only my liberal Democratic friend.
And thanks for the information. I don't live anywhere NYC, but those bringing the virus in from other countries was the reason the pandemic started on the East Coast in New York.

(57,073 posts)And I know you are not in NYC, it is just maddening to see people pretending it is over, knowing it's not.
Yes, teachers should have to be vaxed, too! I recall you telling me about your friend.
Now if the CDC will just approve boosters!
