(15,325 posts)There were all kinds of fashion statements vying for photos & media. Because that's what the event is about afterall.
My fav, just because Iman could wear anything & make a statement, even one that says Icon, Beauty, Class & Grace like the stunning visual worn by the one & only Iman.
*Iman Abdulmajid is a Somali-American fashion model, actress and entrepreneur.
*A muse of designers Gianni Versace, Thierry Mugler, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Yves Saint Laurent.
*She is also noted for her philanthropic work.
*She is the widow of English rock musician David Bowie, whom she married in 1992.
For a stunning majestic visual look that makes you plesantly stop & hit the pause button, this is artistry & craftmanship.

(31,992 posts)Is stunning.
THAT's why I look at the Met Gala dresses each year. That's bringing her "A' game. Spectacular and creative.

And Yara Shahidi in Dior
They both look unbelievably elegant and on point.

(15,325 posts)This is why I also love The Met.
These gowns are pure class & dignity, unlike the trendy totally see-thru costumes (not much there to inspire), but that's the thing about this event.
It's a venue for Designers to show their finest creative craftsmanship. Simple elegant dresses to costumes fit for a Vogue cover.
Well done!

(102,477 posts)If you view the photos (which inexplicably I did earlier this morning), it was like a total clown fest combined with a few entries who essentially came nude. Anything to get attention, though, I guess.
AOC's and Carolyn Malone's ERA-themed dresses were hardly controversial, albeit statement-making.

(15,325 posts)The statement dress was intended for impact.
Isn't this what the designer intended?
Appears then, to have gotten what was intended, right?
The designer got her name recognition.
Why else would she have used the Met to present such a statement dress?
Its a win win as far as the dog eat dog world of celebrity & name recognition.
The designer was successful with her intention.
If she hadn't put the glaring statement in RED on the rather benign common designed dress, we wouldn't be reading about it yet todatly.
It is simply a marketing tool.
I'd say she met her goal in the world of celebrity, fashion statements, & name recognition for herself.
It is a marketing tool same as the designer of Melania Trump's " I don't care do you" jacket.
It's marketing, profit & raising one's recognition within the fashion industry. Capitalism is alive & well in that high stakes competitive industry.
Guaranteed that someone somewhere will profit from the press coverage, controversy isn't necessarily a negative in the world of celebrity & profit.
It's how a designer builds their Brand, & why we see Corp or designer labels on their own 'exclusive' products. Nike, to McDonalds & everywhere else.
Without doing something outrageous at an event with the Press of the entire world watching, nobody would know who the designer is. It s simple marketing for profit & Brand recognition in the competitive Capitalistic fashion & media industry
Bravo!!

(3,407 posts)delivered the message? "She wanted to go to the event....blah, blah, blah..." I stopped watching there.
Of course she wanted to go to the event because she wanted to deliver a message to the people who needed to read the message...That is why I have stopped, almost completely, watching TV shows like this. I saw this video because I love Brianna, I think she is terrific, but the guy? please...

(28,863 posts)The dress wasnt supposed to solve income inequality. It is supposed to push it into the faces of selfish rich people who think out of sight out of mind. Well it was in sight of the whole world.
