Seems like it would screw up the whole system if lawyers could just quit in the middle of proceedings if things weren't going their way. I had the impression that they had to give the judge a good reason to be allowed to take themselves off of the case.

Depends on factors such as whether the client object; is there now a conflict (such as where lawyer knows the client intends to commit perjury or fraud on the court; are there other attorneys on a team to take over the duties; is the client failing or refusing to pay the attorney, . . .
