Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) - 9/24/21

Last edited Sat Sep 25, 2021, 12:42 AM - Edit history (1)

Monologue: Walker, Texas Asshole

Bill recaps the top issues of the week, including outrage over the treatment of migrants at the Texas border and good news for Biden in the Arizona election audit.

Tristan Harris: How Facebook Feeds Your Outrage

Technology ethicist Tristan Harris joins Bill to discuss how Facebook's algorithm feeds users outrage to keep them engaged.

New iPhone Apps

Apple is working on a way to detect users' depression, but that's not the only new feature they're developing.

New Rule: Don't Segregate the Anthem

New Rule: We need to unite as one nation, who come together and sing one anthem. It doesn’t have to be the one we currently use, but it has to be just one.

Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the interview with Tristan Harris (6:49), entire panel discussion with Jennifer Rubin and Richard Ojeda (18:03), and includes the opening part of New Rules (44:35). It won't last long, as usual:

I expected Jennifer Rubin to be good and of course she was, and Richard Ojeda was a pleasant surprise. I hadn't heard of him before.

My only explanation (justification?) is that the Justice Department is taking its time building an air-tight case against everyone.

This is possible, right?

Facebook? I'm livid, morally and from a business angle. My client pays me to promote their product on the platform, which is done organically and non-organically (non-organic means paid advertising and promoted—paid—posts). Why bother when Facebook competes for attention with divisiveness, polarization, and hate?

BTW, this new algorithm is akin to using gasoline to put out a fire.

Good show. Thanks as usual for posting the full version, Rhiannon12866.

And that's what we're all hoping, after hearing that charges/indictments were imminent for so long, that all of the various agencies - New York, DOJ, the House Select Committee - are working to put together a unimpeachable case. *sigh*

And after Cambridge Analytica, I don't see why Facebook is still in business. And it seems like there are more abuses in the news every week. But I know that most people don't follow the news closely and continue to use it, they think of it as just a way to keep up with friends/relatives and some even post photos. Most people don't realize that putting youself out on the internets can be dangerous. I'm sorry that you're forced to deal with it, but it appears that they can continue to get away with anything - and continue to make money.

Glad that you enjoyed the show, I liked it, too.
