New York Hospitals Fire Unvaccinated Staff

- Sept. 28, 2021. New York hospitals began firing or suspending healthcare workers for defying a state order to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Resulting staff shortages prompted some hospitals to postpone elective surgeries or curtail services. Reuters.

.. It’s unclear so far how many people have or will be immediately fired, but health-care facilities around the state were already scrambling to comply with the mandate on Monday, given the potential for a shortage of workers. Erie County Medical Center suspended elective inpatient surgeries and stopped accepting intensive-care transfers from other hospitals. Catholic Health system in Western New York postponed a number of elective surgeries on Monday while it assessed its staffing levels, but by the end of the day, the system had achieved 100 percent compliance with the mandate and dodged a staffing crisis, according to JoAnn Cavanaugh, a spokesperson for the network.

The state’s largest health-care employer, Northwell Health, was the first to confirm that it had fired about two dozen managers on Monday for not getting the shot. While Northwell, which employs 76,000 people statewide, has begun the process of firing the rest of its unvaccinated staff, it would not provide numbers on how many workers it would lose. Gov. Kathy Hochul has said that health-care workers fired for refusing the vaccine will not be eligible for unemployment insurance without a valid accommodation signed by a doctor...

Especially in a Hospital setting, thus exposing others outside of it.

So they can lose their job AND die from Covid.

Who is going to be the one to get greeted by their former co-workers, when they're admitted to the hospital?

By the end of this month. My 2 friends who work there (one in the ER and one in the office) were the first I knew to be vaccinated, they were given the opportunity to get the Pfizer at a major hospital downstate last January and were given $100 for their trouble. Meanwhile, I know an older gentleman (mid 80s) who won't get vaccinated since his daughter is a nurse at that hospital and refuses to get the vaccine and he said he gets his medical advice from her - he said she'd sooner quit her job. Guess that's about to happen ...

Considering requirements to stay up to date on 8 other vaccinations and titers to continue practicing, it's obvious this is only a childish political stance. We're the first to review new data on vaccines, treatments and new procedures, it becomes obvious how many of the ilk are likely to only remain only in minimal licensure CE compliance, and frankly that's no surprise to me. The COVID vaccines have already proven to be one of the safest, with very low incidence of serious secondary effects.
I know of such "caregivers" who are undoubtedly in a conundrum at this point. Both are nearly always surprised with changes in standards of practice and have to be kid-gloved to accommodate second hand education updates that would never be necessary if they kept up on the journals that get distributed at cost of our professional societies. Furthermore one such caregiver grumbled about "socialism" when defending why he isn't in membership. I could only facepalm myself.
I've had it with the dumbing down of those whose higher standards of practice, patient safety-- not "should"-- MUST be exemplary.
I'll take this even further than hospital employment requirements: I'm in full support of anti-vaxxer caregiver practice licenses to be suspended pending compliance unless rigorously deemed medically exempt.

You would be totally at the mercy of people who, frankly, are not hitting on all six.
