(21,670 posts)So many aren't, as we all know - even in this day and age (to say nothing of the Reagan years!).
Thanks for sharing!

(25,899 posts)I know that far too many young people are totally rejected by their families, which is sad and horrifying. I cannot imagine rejecting a child because of being gay. Or trans gender.
My sons happened to have been straight, completely in line with the norms of the culture. Lucky for them.
In the 1970s I worked for an airline, at DCA, Washington National Airport. Most of the men (not all, but most) I worked with were gay. In the beginning they were all totally closeted, but over time came out. Knowing them changed me. I got to understand that who we love isn't restricted by gender. In recent years I've met some trans gender people, which has opened my eyes even farther.
There is still I don't fully understand, but I realize the fault is with me, not with them. I hope to learn more to enlarge my own understanding.
