He like to talk about the war but like all veterans of war he mostly told funny stories and debated strategy.
I had just finished a book about the Battle of the Bulge, we were in his shop, and was asking him about it. At one point I brought up Malmedy and the events surrounding the German massacre of American soldiers. This was the only time I knew I had touched something I should not have touched. He was visibly shaken. His guarded response still disturbs me. He said a lot of innocent Germans died because of what happened in that field. I knew my father had seen and possibly participated in things I would never hear about. I was very careful about the questions I asked after that. I made a mistake that day. That is not how you treat veterans of war.
