New allegations about the Jan. 6. Capitol insurrection as reported by The Daily Beast illuminate another plot by Donald Trumps allies to overturn Joe Bidens victory--this one from Steve Bannon and Donald Trumps trade advisor Peter Navarro, which they dubbed the green bay sweep. Aired on 12/28/2021.

Do you actually not believe that there are people with knowledge that exceeds that of the average person?
Does this only apply when you don't like what's being said?
How do you work this thing?

(8,387 posts)Legal expert is a television personality.
There are lawyers, and legal scholars, who develop or study particular areas of law, but you will not find someone who is a legal expert any more than you will find a science expert.
Do you go to a medical expert for heart surgery? No, you go to a cardiologist.
But, mostly, legal expert is person who says stuff about law on TV which I want to hear.

Weird how that works.

(11,331 posts)against the sort of machinations that Bannon and Navarro were strategizing? And, sadly - I'm not sure the answer to that is the one that a lot of us want to hear. Was Eastman's board game illegal? Either as strategy - or in implementation?
I keep coming back to the fact that early on a lot of our 'legal experts' were telling us that the problem here lay in that we simply don't have legal statues and guardrails for this stuff. Again, sadly. And clearly wanting. But that doesn't change the fact.

(205,731 posts)Government need to be prosecuted - this is dangerous stuff! We completely blew it, the last time this happened. After the Civil War, the only casualties were those men on both sides who fought and died of injuries or disease. The secessionist leaders escaped untouched. As Mary Trump says in her recent book, Robert E. Lee, Commander of the Confederate Army, the side who lost, not only went on to live out the rest of his life, but he became president of Washington College and it was renamed Washington and Lee. He even looked the other way when a KKK chapter was formed there. And in 1975, his U.S. citizenship was restored.
We keep hearing about the prosecutions of the January 6th insurrectionists, those who violently attacked the Capitol, but what about the leaders who planned and supported it, whether they showed up, or not (TFG)? And we know now that numerous members of Congress - who are still serving and living their lives as they did before - were actively involved in those plans. Those are the ones who need to be brought to justice, and we know that they have learned nothing, they're still plotting and planning, have set their sights on 2024.

(11,331 posts)I sincerely hope something is done to these architects of anti-democratic sedition. Be happy to lead the cheering section if/when it occurs. On the other hand, we have a constant drumbeat of the DOJ "sitting on their hands," "not doing their jobs" - when I'm still not sure what the legal framework is for prosecuting a paper coup (as, I suspect, is the case with a lot of legal minds). And a chorus of "They should .." and "lock 'em up" - doesn't go very far in clearing that up.

(53,801 posts)and nearly a year later the DOJ has taken no action. Is something still to come/about to happen?
I don't know but a year of inaction is too long. We all saw crimes committed against the Capitol building/federal government and the highest prosecutor in the land, the Attorney General/DOJ has not taken action and has not in any way indicated that action will be taken.
In my opinion that should've been job one for Garland when he was confirmed. He should operate like a prosecutor and bring forth indictments against the crimes we all saw instead of operating like the deliberative, cautious judge appeals court judge he was in presiding in trials.
And I guess waiting to see what the House Jan. 6 committee is going to come up with. He should have parallel investigations going on as the DOJ has way more investigative capability than sitting House members.
