12. Yes, at the time of the Civil War the penalty for treason was hanging.

But after the death of Lincoln, Reconstruction largely came to a halt under Andrew Johnson. He even returned lands allocated to Freedmen to their former owners so they would "owe" him. As for Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis - Lee became president of Washington College and the name was eventually changed to Washington and Lee, in honor of him - even though he looked the other way when a KKK chapter was started there. And both Lee and Davis had their citizenship posthumously restored by modern presidents, Gerald Ford and, unbelievably, Jimmy Carter.
