Texas Faces Power Outages, Freezing Temperatures During Winter Storm

A winter storm bringing dangerous levels of snow and ice has left thousands of homes without power and has caused more than 9,000 flights to be cancelled nationwide. NBC News’ Morgan Chesky has the details.

"We all knew we were one outage away from losing our positions," said Cramton, as he sat down for his first on-camera interview since the freeze. "Electricity gets into trouble when politics intervenes."

On the supply side, Cramton said Texas needs to actually require power generators to weatherize their equipment, something the new laws do not do adequately. Texas also needs to look to solar, wind, and other forms of green energy, which performed above expectations during the freeze.

"There are plenty of electricity experts in Texas," said Cramton, but they are not necessarily independent. "The problem is that there are insufficient electricity experts in Texas who are not associated with the electricity market participants." Meaning experts in the field who would not financially benefit from whatever decisions ERCOT makes.
