(111,271 posts)because I cut my baby teeth on the civil rights movement in the south at about the time Nixon lost to Kennedy.
This country was just as fascist in the 1920s and early 1930s with the rich and corporate openly supporting Hitler and Mussolini and even trying to stage a coup to remove FDR (thank you, Smedley Butler). The Republicans had a series of disastrous presidencies, but as long as Wall Street managed to hang together and give people the illusion of living in a free and prosperous country, they kept voting the bastards back in. Fascists have always been among us. Reagan just hit the motherlode with the Evangelicals when he promised to turn women back into enslaved breeding stock.
The right in its various incarnations throughout this nation's history is now and always has been deeply fascist. They haven't changed at all. Even the media reach hasn't gotten that much farther since the days of Father Coughlin on the radio and yellow journalism. What they usually end up doing is pushing so far to the right that they start to fight each other over orthodoxy and end up self destructing because they made too many deals with too many devils and all the devils start arguing about who will t5ake it all over.
It's overdue.
