The fact that this has not gone smoothly for Putin means a lose-lose situtation for him.
He can't win if he's destroying the nation he said he was trying to save from Nazis.

If the conflict/war/invasion of Ukraine continues without a clear Russian victory - Can Putin survive? Not only politically but with his life? And if he fears a take over by one of the other oligarchs, what is his life worth?
So with the threat of death - how far would he go?
