(38,420 posts)Putin is kind of ...Stupid...He doesn't know his own history when Hitler invaded the Soviet Union..
...Now he has learned more than he expected to ever learn. And it could cost him more than he could imagine.
..500 could become 5000 or maybe far more. I am just guessing...but...I think that Putin thought it would
be shortly over. I doubt it. But I do not know the future.

(205,243 posts)This is a war of Putin's choice only to satisfy his personal ambitions. The Russian people had such hope when the USSR fell - and KGB-trained Putin is trying to recreate it.

(205,243 posts)My grandmother asked me to accompany her and her peace group on their first visit - they had a "sister town" there. Russia was absolutely devastated by WWII, fought on their own soil, thousands suffered, starved and died. There were statues and plaques all over commemorating those who were lost and the message was "never again." The Russian people did not choose this war, Putin did.

(205,243 posts)There was a bit of a panic during that time since Reagan's tough stance with Gorbachev caused the Russian hard liners to push back against Gorbachev's more progressive policies which gave the people such hope. I remember one older lady who had served as a nurse during WWII and she said "Please, when you go back, tell your president that we want peace." Still chokes me up. That was the prevailing sentiment back then...
