has seen more than it's share of war. Over 1,000 years, battles have been fought back and forth through and around the town. It was a major point of contention between the Russians and Austrians, two opposing empires, in WWI. Poland did not exist as a country until after WWI. This area saw some of the fiercest fighting and destruction during WWI. The city was and maybe still is called the "Fortress City." In WWI it had a 40 mile diameter ring of fortifications around the town. Some of which exists to this day, mainly used for tourists who are interested in history. Yes, the Poles and Ukrainians sadly share too much tragedy in their history. Likely why we witness the huge showing of compassion for their war torn neighbors.

My maternal grandmother emigrated to this country as a young girl in 1912 from Russian-occupied Poland.
