(21,947 posts)I feel like no-fly zone is being thrown around like its a magic bullet that would suddenly stop the fighting, when in fact it would only escalate things. A no-fly zone would not to stop the shelling of Ukrainian civilians and the Russians dont seem to have air superiority anyway, so Im not even sure what the point would be. The Ukrainians already seem to be doing a pretty good job of shooting down Russian jets and helicopters.
I think a lot of people are using no-fly zone as a stand-in for just do something. I get that its sickening to watch whats being done over there but I dont think it would turn out the way people hope it would.

(205,320 posts)Putin likely thought he'd just move in and take over, as Russians have done in the past. But no one counted on the the strength and resolve of the Ukrainian people - and the Western countries are doing the right thing, supporting them any way they can, but it is a delicate line - going too far could result in all out war with the countries supplying aid, too. Once he started this, Putin is not going to back down.
One big factor to be grateful for is that we currently have the most experienced POTUS in history in Biden, he was chosen as VP for his foreign policy experience and he already spent 8 years in the Executive Branch - and he knows and has chosen the best most experienced people, as well. Not to mention, he has the respect and support of our allies. If this had happened any earlier, I cringe to imagine the outcome.
That's my take, anyway... I visited the USSR in the late '80s with my grandmother and the peace group she was part of. There was such hope back then when Gorbachev instituted more progressive policies - and the people we met were very wary of Reagan of his tough stance with Gorbachev which made things tougher for them. So I feel for the Russian people, as well, since Putin has gone back to the abuses of the past and seems determined to recreate the USSR.
