Plus, all Putin's conquests depend on his determination. When he is out of power, by election, or more likely by assassination, his successor will probably give Ukraine its independence again. So this whole war is pointless in the long run.

Ukraine population before the war was 44 million. Say 10 million emigrate (it’s about 2 million so far). Putin would need to kill 24 million. This would be more than WWII total; someone please tell me that even Putin is not capable of this genocide.

Edit to add: Beau alluded to this, saying it would cause an underground resistance in Russia, with no other details. So I’m not sure how much faith to have in that.
