I was glad to see the dogs were along for the ride out. What a nightmare.

That has got to be additionally tough, so kudos to them. Pets always suffer during these times of extreme crisis and that's additionally heartbreaking.

I think I mentioned that I visited the USSR with my grandmother and her peace group in the late '80s - and I couldn't help notice the dogs, since I was missing my own. We were on a plane, going from one part of Russia to another - the country is huge - when I thought I heard a dog woof. So I checked down the aisle and I was right, farther up across the aisle there was a woman sitting in the aisle seat with her small dog on her lap! And later, when we left the plane, the smiling flight attendant at the exit had a larger dog on a leash who I figured was waiting for the owner to exit the plane, one too big for a lap dog.

On the trip we had a series of guides, an American guide who left with us from NYC who was with us throughout the trip, a Russian guide based in Moscow who was with us throughout the country - and then additional city guides for the three other cities we visited who specialized in that area. They definitely kept track of us! We were very fortunate to have Tania, our Russian guide, since she was knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming - and she told us about her dog. She was in her 30s, married, and lived with her husband in an apartment in Moscow. She described her dog as an Afghan - and told us that when her husband came home he'd say "Who's the most beautiful girl in Moscow?!" And he was talking to their dog!
