Canadian commander who helped train Ukrainian soldiers has 'immense confidence' in them



Lt.-Col. Melanie Lake shares her experience training Ukrainian soldiers as commander of the Canadian military training mission dubbed Operation Unifier, from March to October 2021. 'I'm immensely proud and inspired by them,' she says.

have a distinct advantage over the Soviet troops on a 1-on-1 basis. They have been taught and empowered to operate on their own recognizance while on a mission, instead of having to consult with a rigid top-down command structure. While the Russians are having to consult with some apparatchik over whether they can engage, the Ukrainians have already undertaken to engage, destroy and disengage.

One can see this in the video from a few days ago when a tank column was engaged by anti-armor fire, they stopped, dithered for a bit and then retreated. So many things wrong tactically with the situation depicted in that video.

Remember too that Ukraine has a land area about 1/5 the size of India. That is a lot of countryside for the defenders to disappear into and resurface elsewhere. And, they are primarily being supported and assisted by the locals. Farmers with tractors stealing Russian armor illustrates just what the mentality, sentiment and originality of the populace is and will be.
