He creates noise to keep himself in the spotlight. We are worse off for accepting the darkest take on everything.

That's no one's business except parents and their kid. As for the term "woke", Maher said nothing wrong. He said he was for it because it meant against injustice. He's not wrong as it's a Black slang word that replaced the less hip "politically aware" term a few years back.

Racist whites have co-opted it and turned it into a bogeyman/umbrella word for all the so-called, evil policies of the left that they're against. Much like they've done by claiming "critical race theory" is being taught in schools to make white kids ashamed of themselves and their history.

That of course is a lie as it's a law school level theory but it's a convenient bogeyman for racist white people ashamed of their cruel history of brutality towards Blacks and other POCs in the past.

They're ashamed of the country's history and of the truth and want to keep it hidden. Period.

And of course defund the police remains the dumbest slogan ever coined so Maher, not a particular favorite of mine either, is not wrong there either.

Continuing to fund or increase funding for massive police budgets or the idea that more training will solve police brutality is a lot dumber. So was Biden’s idea to shoot them in the leg.

At least defunding is a real solution and Maher got away with his illegal cannabis use. I’m sure he would feel differently if he was a victim of police brutality.

He also uses the word woke like a dog whistle.

but a vote loser and it cost Dems House seat in 2020. It's couldn't be any worst wording for a slogan. I know, I know. it has to be explained that it means re-allocating police to social services departments for domestic violence calls, or to other departments.

Well that has to be the slogan. "Re-allocate police funds", or "Fire Killer Cops", or "Train Cops Better" because defund the police means no police to the average voter. And I'm a Black man and I know society needs well trained police, not no police. Defund means no money for police.

We have to be way smarter than to play into wngernrepublican hands than to be yelling no police, because that's what defund means. Pls stop advocating such a dumb slogan.

Democrats won the House in an election narrower than the experts thought so a lot of Democrats think they should have won by more but the candidates that lost was Max Rose who represented a district that voted for Giuliani. A Collin Peterson who told a voter that Ilhan Omar doesn’t belong in the Democratic Party.

I think conventional wisdom is killing a good idea. I followed policing for a long time and I heard a lot of dumb ideas but cutting police budgets isn’t one of them. Body cameras was supposed to be the police reform idea but it has done little to reduce police brutality. To me it depends on the department. Some departments are more corrupt then others or it depends on the culture within the departments. A Phoenix police officer threatened to kill the Phoenix mayor if she defunded the department but she didn’t even do or say anything. A police union Twitter account telling a DA that won an election against their favored candidate to watch his 6. The account also complained he had Harris campaign for him in a narrow election. The point is I see a lot more dumb stuff from police and police slogans.

I prefer to follow Wagatwe & Mariame Kaba on these topics than Bill Maher.

Nobody is following him. Defund the police was coined by a street cemonstrator and many otherwise responsible people picked it up and ran with it. It's damaging the Democratic Party. Please stop advocating it.

Slogans should say what they mean and should not have to be explained. Defund the police means no funds for police, which means to the average voter, no police. That's just stupiid and is a vote loser. You yourself know police are needed, even if just for extreme emergencies.

Say "Fire killer Cops". Anything but the stupidest slogan ever created because that's just giving republicans campaign ad material. And they used that very slogan very effectively to defeat Dem candidates, and will continue to if we ourselves keep advocating it.

People have been advocating for it years but after George Floyd was killed there was mainstream attention to what the BLM activists were asking for. NY Times published an op-Ed from Mariame Kaba (I actually followed her since the primaries) for example. Maher was upset with The NY Times for publishing it.

The same people who advocated for the policy for years will continue to do so whether the Democratic Party does or not or whether there is mainstream attention to their demands.

I have a 100% service connected disability so I will continue to favor the policy because of this stat — https://www.treatmentadvocacycenter.org/key-issues/criminalization-of-mental-illness/2976-people-with-untreated-mental-illness-16-times-more-likely-to-be-killed-by-law-enforcement-

advocating "Defund the Police"? I don't care what words you keep using that speaks of policy, or Maher objecting to the NYT article, or the NYT article itself, the term "Defund the Police", that exact wording, has not been used for years. It was created, as you said, during the George Floyd demonztrations...that exact wording. It's dumb and a vote loser.

We all need to stop using it as it's just fodder ror republican ads to defeat Dem candidates.

Mainstream outlets gave some of their demands some attention I only used publishing the op-Ed by NYT as an example but it has been around for years. Police budgets have exploded since the 70s.

Wiki

Black Lives Matter, the Movement for Black Lives, and other activists have used the phrase to call for police budget reductions and to delegate certain police responsibilities to other organizations.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] In Black Reconstruction in America, first published in 1935, W. E. B. Du Bois wrote about "abolition-democracy", which advocated for the removal of institutions that were rooted in racist and repressive practices, including prisons, convict leasing, and white police forces. In the 1960s, activists such as Angela Davis advocated for the defunding or abolition of police departments.[17] The 2017 book The End of Policing by Alex S. Vitale has been called "a manual of sorts for the defund movement."[18]

To answer your question it depends on the department at the end of the day it is a local city budget issue. Sheriff Joe’s department when he was in charge is a good example.

Depending on the department and yes I feel police are tasked to do too much that goes beyond crime fighting so I believe those areas of police departments should be defunded. Maybe more funding for homicide detectives. Even with that it depends on the department.

have a problem with defund the police. The fact is Maher continually talks about his illegal drug use (to be fair it is now legal drug use) for which he got exactly zero consequences. I wonder just how upset he would be over defund the police if he had been arrested for said drug use.
