OP
Not to mention that China can't ignore how the rest of the world has reacted to Russia's invasion

China has the #3 ranked military in the world and has been feeling invincible and empowered. It has helped Putin weaken western democracies and thought it was well on its way to 21st century superpower status. Autocracies would rule the planet.
But now China is seeing that the road to ultimate power is rocky, autocracies have drawbacks.
The western world is actually going to fight back.
I think China is going to be very careful about how it helps Putin.

They have become a world pariah and it wouldn't benefit China to become equally marginalized...

The thought of global economic sanctions must terrify him.
