The answer is that the oil companies are some of the biggest media advertisers! During the BP oil spill litigation my boss tried to appear on the MSNBC, CNN, ABC and CBS shows he had been on before about the 2005 BP Texas City plant explosion. All of the producers we dealt with told us no because the networks were not airing BP oil spill victim impact stories. BP and the other oil companies threatened to pull ads if they did.

Big corporate advertisers control which stories we hear about and the ones we don’t. Look no further than the old McDonald’s coffee case to see this in action.
