Heather Conley, president of the German Marshall Fund, talks about how Russian belligerence has made its non-NATO neighbors nervous that they could be next after Ukraine, driving them toward NATO even as Vladimir Putin tries to blame his invasion of Ukraine on NATO expansion.

(7,430 posts)Putin has abandoned a strategic geopolitical plan for tactical destruction of a country. He's sealing his doom by adhering to a long-abandoned dream of Russian empire. There will be no recreation of a Russian empire (which is what the USSR actually was). What's the phrase? Putin is trying to "push the river." He can't push the river, and he'll increase his failure the more he tries.
I find it amazing that he doesn't know this, or at minimum, he PRETENDS that he doesn't know this. Either way, he's doomed to failure, because either not knowing or pretending to not know will yield the same result.
Russia's overall population is in decline. Russia's citizens' life expectancy is in decline. Russia's young adults lean away from having children because they know that the future looks bleak in their country.
On top of the abject evil spread by Putin in his destruction of a large and vibrant nation, Putin is ALSO pushing the human species closer toward ecospherical annihilation. The world's nations desperately need to address global warming NOW. Not after Putin's self-indulgent killing ends. The ecosphere is becoming increasingly toxic to human survival, and Putin has to make it worse. How anyone with a minimal knowledge base can morally tolerate Putin's murderous behavior is beyond any presumption of principles of biological survival.
