(14,529 posts)Hey! How is it going?
I have had a hideous couple of weeks but things are looking up.
Cool..this would be the first time I am watching Maher post 2004 or something similar.

(202,208 posts)Good to see you back! And this has not been my week, either - something has got to improve, at least the snow is receding. *fingers crossed*
And you picked a decent week for Bill Maher, he had really good guests this week!

(202,208 posts)People forget that he's a comedian who likes to discuss politics, not a political pundit - and yes, he exaggerates or says outrageous things to get a laugh. And he has had some objectionable people on, hoping to win an argument with them - or hoping that his other panelists will. He doesn't usually have much luck (Geraldo Rivera), but if people skipped the show when Ben Shapiro was on, they completely missed Malcolm Nance putting him firmly in his place! And doesn't anyone remember Bill's previous show, "Politically Incorrect??"
And I really admire his animal advocacy as well - not to mention his environmental activism. As for his criticism of Democrats, isn't he the one who handed Barack Obama a million dollar check (and was sued by TFG)?
So even if I don't always agree with him, I still usually enjoy the show. I figure we need all the laughs we can get these days! And I've posted the show here since 2017, since I know that not everyone stays up as late as I do or has cable - or even TV. So I post it for those who look for it - and I'm so glad you got to see it this week!

(202,208 posts)All this week! Since I used to work with CBS, I was aware of the basketball playoffs, but what was up with Seth Meyers? And The Daily Show was preempted entirely! However, Jimmy Kimmel was still on with new shows and my buddy TexasTowelie posts his monologue - which is also political and very funny...
And I know what you mean, even though they all bring up the latest news and the political situation, it sure helps to have some humor - so I was looking forward to Bill Maher tonight. So glad you found it, I post it every week it's on. SNL is also a repeat this week but John Oliver is going to be back with a new show on Sunday. I do keep track of the comedians...

(202,208 posts)You'd think he might have mentioned it, he obviously chose to wear it to the show for a reason, but there was a lot to talk about this week. Thanks for finding out!

(63,221 posts)I really liked all the guests and I thought it was a really good show until New Rules came along. I think Bill has a real issue with women. He just doesn't get it.
I was offended by the segment, actually. It was degrading to women.
He seems to conflate actual masculinity with "toxic masculinity" when they are two different things. Zelensky is a real man because he is first and foremost REAL. It's not an act with him. He is an intelligent, caring man who is also able to be a brave warrior when circumstances call for it. That is why women find him so sexy. Because they know it's not an act with him. He cares about his family, his nation and the families in his nation and will risk his life to protect them.
Toxic Masculinity, which is what Bill thinks "this" is, and what women are getting all excited about is what "men" like Putin and Trump display. Weak, insecure, selfish men who put on a show to try to convince others how "manly" they are, when in reality they are nothing but pathetic, emasculated wimps.

(202,208 posts)And the discussions were good, we learned from Julia Ioffe and the panel was smart and informed. And I agree that this was probably his weakest New Rules of the season - and it can't have gone over well with his female viewers since we know that Ukrainian women are participating in the fighting, we've seen the news. *sigh*
But I've learned to take Bill Maher with a grain of salt, "take what you want and leave the rest," since he's also a comedian - and, if you remember his previous show, "Politically Incorrect," part of his humor is focused on the outrageous. And "Real Time" does (usually) attract more serious guests.
His "funny bit" (during the panel discussion) was not his best, either, parts of that were cringeworthy too. I agree that he could have approached the popularity of Zelensky from a different angle, that he's admired everywhere because of his unprecedented courage. But that wouldn't have been at all funny and isn't something that we'd be still talking about the next day. LOL.
And one thing I've noticed this season is that he hasn't had guests that he knows will be unpopular with his audience - which is people like us. Granted, many of them have recent books, but that's true of all the shows - And I appreciate the guests, even if I don't always agree with Bill.
