Putin is the cat.

as we narrow the alley, Putin may do some crazy shit.

Is that what we want?

Sensible political and negotiation theory suggests that one should always leave the other party a way to back away honorably.

In this instance Honor is already lost.

But the need for an exit path for Putin remains urgent.

Without one, he may well choose further escalation with the west on his terms.
