NY DA Bragg tries to double-talk his way out of his decision to end the Trump criminal investigation

During the course of the extended criminal investigation into Donald Trump's financial crimes by the New York District Attorney's Office, the lead prosecutors, Mark Pomerantz and Carey Dunne, were preparing to indict Trump for "multiple felonies" which they believed they could prove beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the newly elected District Attorney Alvin Bragg took office on January 1 and promptly killed the investigating, including returning evidence to witnesses. A public outcry followed. So now, DA Bragg is trying to talk his way out of his earlier decision attempting to sell to New Yorkers the claim that he really is still investigating Donald Trump's crimes.

finally got trump. I mean that would be a ticket to higher office—maybe the governor's mansion, the Senate, and even higher in the future.

To have gotten where he is means he's not a dumb man, so why didn't he reach for the brass ring?

Something is up.
