Related: About this forumLet's talk about Mallory McMorrow and identifying with the bad guy....
really good, even for beau. it isnt history that makes kids feel bad, it's the part where the slavers are the heroes.
'history doesnt make your kids feel bad, their parents siding w the bad guys is what makes you kids feel bad.'
and- the heroes are out there, teach that.
brilliant.

(31,068 posts)Particularly all the way back to colonial Virginia. I always thought it was interesting. I never felt guilty about it, am I supposed to?
i caught a couple of episodes of finding your roots a couple weeks ago. rosanne cash, and another country star named wood. both found enslavers in their tree.
they were both asked how they felt about that. both said they were ashamed of those ancestors, but not of having black ancestors. the guy's story was of a ggrandfather who freed his 9 (iirc) children, but not their mother. he was somewhat comforted by that act.
they didnt feel guilty, but they did feel bad, ashamed.
conversely, i have an ancestor that was a great irish hero. am i proud of that? why yes i am.
am i glad to know that? again, yes i am. because i thought i was a weirdo but i'm very much like him. not that i compare, i dont. but i have gone w few rounds w city hall here in chi, among other battles, and i think my ggggreat uncle would be proud.
and that's the point- why are we teaching the villains and not the heroes?
