(54,403 posts)1. Since part of Moldova is Russian-speaking, Putin is using the old "it is part of Russia" line
If he keeps this up, there are a few blocks of lower Manhattan where he will be stationing Russian troops next.
I don't doubt that if it becomes strategically convenient, Putin will find a pretext for saying that the Romanian-speaking part of Moldova is also "part of Russia."

(2,065 posts)2. I Say a Prayer for the Safety of Boris Rudenko and Vasile Iovu,
Who are two great fellow Pan Flutists from the Republic of Moldova. Here is a suite of popular Moldavian / Moldovan folk melodies played by the incomparable Boris Rudenco on the Pan Flute:
Here is a video of Daniela Condurache singing Trandafir de la Moldova, or "The Rose of Moldova", which is almost like the unofficial national anthem of Moldova; it is a lyrical salute to the beautiful and spirited women of the region, who are beautiful like the rose, but have hidden thorns that might sting you:
The following video is of Vasile Iovu playing "Lacrimile Prutului", or "The Tears of the Prut River" on his Pan Flute. In the cover photo, he is holding his Pan Flute, and the sash or belt he is wearing is displaying the three colors of the Romanian flag. You see, the Russians came in to Eastern Europe after World War II and seized half of the region of Moldova, which had traditionally been part of Romania, for themselves, taking the part that was east of the Prut River and turning it into the Republic of Moldova - and sending in ethnic Russians to populate the place and turn it more Russian - which is a tactic they may also have employed in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. Anyway, Vasile Iovu is a proud ethnic Romanian living in a Republic that was taken over by Russians and Russianized after WWII, and this is a piece, which he composed in the style of a Doina, or rhapsodic ode in free rhythm, to express the grief and longing that ethnic Romanians in Moldova feel for their ancestral homeland.
The reporter who was doing this video mispronounced the capital city of the Republic of Moldova, Chishinau, saying, Key-She-NOW. The correct Romanian pronunciation is Key-She- NO. Back during the Soviet era, they Russianized the name of the capital city of Moldova to call it Khishiniev.
I hope that you have enjoyed my little educational musical and cultural presentation on Moldova here, to give you some cultural and historical background on the region, and also to highlight the invasive Russianizing tactics of the Soviets / Russians in what was originally part of Romania, the country that gave us the Pan Flute.
