Off Guadalcanal, the sound there is referred to as "Iron Bottom Sound" for the number of Japanese and Allied warships and transports sunk there.

In both instances (Baltics and Solomons), not only does the risk of oil leaking from the wrecks pose environmental hazards, the presence of unexploded ordinance makes even exploring and examining these wrecks by divers a very risky undertaking.

of radioactive wastes from Russian nuclear submarines. Horrible stuff: guys handling dripping hoses of the stuff with no protection, etc.

Also, we've got a horrible situation with radioactive and other WW2 wastes dumped off the coast of CA. Probably east and gulf coasts also.
