1. My best guess says they're trying to obliterate everything in their way

in order to have a buffer zone between them and what they've grabbed, where Ukraine doesn't dare rebuild, so that in 10 years or so, they can rebuild their own military and finish the job of Ukrainian genocide once and for all. That's Dugin's dream and Putin loves him.

I also don't think it's going to work out that way, I think NATO is going to have to get a little more serious about what they send Ukraine in terms of long range death so that they can obliterate the Russians, instead, kick them completely out of Ukraine.

I also think we're going to hear more whispers out of Russia about sabotage in that country. There are a lot of Ukrainians who live there and a lot of Russian speaking Ukrainians who can "pass." Whooever does it, it will get done.
