This sounds like a set up EXCUSE for the trump excuse 'I didn't know he was drunk and I listened to my "lawyers" advise' therefore, I should be excused of my crimes...

He had practicing lawyers giving him legitimate counsel, but he didn't like what they advised, so he went with the drunk... And he always rejected advice when it went against his own opinions and whims, anyway. "Only I can fix it."
