Starting with Wilson we had a liberal foreign policy which had the effect of making the states live up to being liberal. Not always but having gone through a shooting war to hold the states together and the anti slave states winning that war half a century previously made those unsaid rules to favor the victors. Again not everywhere and not every time but we were seen as because we lived more liberal than just about anywhere else. The fight to take leadership during the Great Depression was after a political fight between progressive Republicans and liberal Democrats both of which had the most trouble shaking racism. Class was less obvious. WWII swept aside some of that from the outside, overseas racewise, only to become too real back home. Post war it became a struggle to figure out how to allow minorities to vote and that hit a flashpoint in the mid fifties which lasted until Nixon started appointing justices from both the left and the right. Then to here and now. It doesn’t need to end if enough people vote Democrat. We can get back on track. Not this originalist look in a mirror thing. The Constitution is there to allow positive change if we take command and control.

Of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention, about 25 owned slaves.

On the other hand, a majority (41 of 56) of the signers of the Declaration of Independence owned slaves. Four of the first five US presidents were slaveowners (i.e. rampant sexual abusers of Black women, amongst other sins).

Just clearing up the facts before some right-winger tries to divert away from her main points with historial corrections.
