so I find that line of reasoning highly suspect.

He was retired from active mayhem but he was still connected and an important figurehead. This is a major black eye for the Taliban, not only reminding them that they're not omnipotent, but that the whole world now knows their word is useless. Negotiations for aid will undoubtedly fall through and the country's isolation increase.

Hellfire missiles don't leave much, good luck with that state funeral. Also, don't forget that he and his organization killed more Muslims than anyone else.
