Young Pre-'Daily Show' Jon Stewart's Compelling Performance (1997 WH Correspondents Dinner)

With Jon Stewart (deservedly) back in the news, I thought I'd post his gig at the 1997 White House Correspondents Dinner. Apparently, Rosie O'Donnell and that fascist wit, Dennis Miller, declined to do the gig, so they settled on Stewart, before his Daily Show success ("...isn't that what the confirmation process is about here in Washington? Weeding out the truly qualified to get to the truly available." ) Some DU youngsters may not recognize names and issues, but it's sharply funny and mostly transcends era.

When Republicans were considered reckless, dangerous extremist demagogues, the true business of governing had to compete with idiotic and pointless distractions from the right, the American president was constantly being threatened with irrelevant, baseless accusations.
