Roger Waters defends Russia and China. He accuses the U.S. of fueling the war in Ukraine and says Zelensky should negotiate with Putin. He thinks NATO is a threat to Russia thus justifying Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Taiwan is still a part of China and China never invaded another country. Also Russia was already winning World War II when the U.S. entered the war! Then Waters tells Smerconish he "should read more". I don't know if he is delusional or if he is ramping up publicity for his tour, but his views are absolutely bizarre. Unfortunately, a lot of people agree with him in the comments and they aren't all Russian. I feel like I fell asleep and woke up in Opposite World.

(11,029 posts)And I still love Floyd and most of his solo material. I've seen him a 1/2 dozen times at least, and they've consistently been among the best concerts I've seen.
But this tankie flex is just cringe. Someone needs to stop reading Jacobin. I haven't bought tickets for is show in October, and if he's using it to call Biden a warmonger, I just... /headdesk
PatSeg
(47,501 posts)He has been reading far-left writers? Do you think Jacobin advocates the things he was saying? A lot of what he said really made no sense in the real world.

(47,501 posts)It does explain things a bit better. So now we know what he probably meant when he admonished Smerconish to "read more". It is hard enough dealing with the far-right conspiracy theories, I wasn't prepared to deal with some far-left nuttery.

(102,292 posts)I suspect his colleagues at MSNBC keep him from going too far on the extreme side of "left," but he's occasionally said or at least inferred some things that gave me pause. There is a spectrum on our side as well...

But if your gut says that his actual words don't exist, okay, I guess...

(6,265 posts)especially in these times. As a 74-year-old mixed-race American, these last years are proving to be a challenge. When I look around me, ALL THE TIME NOW, I feel like I felt in Vietnam. Everyone around me was an enemy. Same here now concerning a certain racial persuasion and their self-hating helpers. Walker in Georgia and Thomas on the SC are prime examples. Some I don't know, some by the eye f*** they give me which are most definitely saying I hate you n****. And I know they want me dead. So someone can say anything, it is the heart that matters to me. My neighbours of different racial persuasions look me in the eyes and always have treated me kindly and I trust. Yet and I know at least 70 million hearts out here are full of hate based on a fear of being supplanted racially. I don't have the luxury of trusting UNTIL I look in your eyes then I can proceed however from there.
You are entitled to trust what your heart tells you to trust. I proceed on the same path.
Since the former POTUS arrived on the scene, I now know lies have replaced truth. Fear has replaced trust. HATE has replaced LOVE.
I trust my instincts, they got me through many dangerous situations. I will continue to.

(102,292 posts)on many issues (though I have a bit of sympathy for his more balanced views on Palestine), but he's always been far left--just not always so extreme. While I do not believe he's pro-Putin, his anti-war views have him as the equivalent of an enabler--like the Jill Steins of our side.

(47,501 posts)though I have no idea what his views were years ago. It seems that in recent years a lot of people have gone off the rails in many regards. We live in very strange times.
Hi there!
Gaugamela
(2,496 posts)can get stuck in them, and lose sight of the real world implications. Fortunately, the left-wing version doesnt advocate violence, and isnt generally as hermetically sealed. I say this as both a longtime PF fan and one whose politics falls pretty far to the left. I will admit that I havent watched the video above, but Im familiar enough Waters views from other interviews not to be surprised by summary in the OP. I just salute Mr. Waters for the wonderful music, and move on.
PatSeg
(47,501 posts)about the violence, at least in this day and age. My views have always leaned left, but I'm inclined to combine that with pragmatisms, as I like seeing ideas translated into real change.
I didn't realize that the "left-wing echo chamber" could be that extreme. Some of his views come across as delusional.

(2,580 posts)Not going to watch the interview. I figure it will make me feel sick and sad. Love his music. I don't look to celebrities to teach me about politics. It is my responsibility to get informed and to make my own decisions. I love it when they express views that are in harmony with mine, or support causes that I believe in. But, I don't expect it, and I remain free to disagree with them and even boycott them if they go too far off the rails. This does make me really sad.

(15,334 posts)But I would never take political advice from Pete or Roger.
To me, it's no different than a star football player thinking he is qualified to be a Senator because he was good at football.
What makes these folks "experts" on anything except making great music?
Susan Sarandon made some good movies, so we should listen to her about politics?
Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos made a lot of money, so we should take governing advice from them?
Donnie Dipshit was a fucking reality TV businessman, so he should be president?
These stars have opinions. So do I. Their opinions shouldn't matter any more, or less than mine
PatSeg
(47,501 posts)didn't give them a platform for their political views though. Was it necessary to give credence to his extreme views on cable news? It gave Waters free publicity, but can hardly be considered serious news and commentary.
