Related: About this forumThom Hartmann: Could a Black or Dem Prez have an Open Marriage too?
Eleanor Clift, Newsweek & Tim Cavanaugh, Columnist-Reason Magazine andReason.com. Marianne Gingrich is now talking about her ex-husband Newt in an interview airing on ABC tonight. And word on the street is that Newt wanting an "open marriage" is just one of many explosive revelations set to come out in tonight's interview, in which his ex-wife says he lacks the character to be President. What does it say about our society - and our press - that if a Black man like Obama had done the same he would have had no chance whatsoever to run for high office?

(8,556 posts)Seems to me that Cain could have continued and maybe even stayed viable despite the accusations. The Big Dawg weathered similar accusations just fine back in 1992 (although not black, he is a Democrat).
And Newt didn't have an 'open marriage'. He asked for one and was denied. He committed adultery and there's a difference there. An 'open marriage' implies consent from both spouses and it looks like his ex-wife didn't give that. He's denying the story so it's pretty much a he said/she said situation. While I find it plausible that Newt asked for permission to do his thing, I can't know that for sure. What we do know for sure is that he committed adultery, which is worse, really, since he did it behind his spouse's back.
