This contention that the documents had all been declassified with a wink and a nod from Trump.

It doesn't matter that whether the documents that Trump stole are declassified. He has no right to take possession of ANY federal documents regardless of their classification status.

The violation becomes substantially worse if the FBI found that the documents Trump possessed were at a high level of classification. But, even if the documents were no longer classified, these documents did not belong to him and should have never been transported to Mar A Lago. Stealing these documents is a crime unto itself.

2. If they're declassified we need to put a FOI for them right now.

It's clearly BS, because another aspect of the situation is "transmission." If Trump declassified them then we should all be able to see them and they should be public record. The argument they seem to be trying to make is that they're declassified, but we can't let the public see them, which implies that they are classified. It is a masterpiece of doublespeak, but the logic of the argument seems to fall apart.

Personally have no idea how to submit an FOI request. What level of specificity in terms of the filing? Do you have to have the actual document number?
