Donald Trump sent an ally with access to the DOJ to "pass along a message" to Attorney General Garland that "the country is on fire" and Trump is willing to act "to reduce the heat," according to the New York Times. The unusual attempt to secretly back channel with the DOJ, after Trump's home was searched and as he is the subject of multiple investigations, comes amidst "a spike in threats" to police identified by FBI director Christopher Wray, and several alarming incidents and arrests.
MSNBC's Chief Legal Correspondent Ari Melber reports on the violent context for Trump's "message," and the failure of efforts to negotiate or "appease" individuals threatening violence to deter the rule of law.

(22,129 posts)calm down his thugs but where was he? He incited them, he got them all rowdy and wild, and then offers to calm them down?
Really fine behavior for an ex-president.
If I were Pres. Joe Biden (and I'm not, he's by far the best person for that job), I wouldn't want to be in his shoes but he's good at making good judgments, good decisions, and if things come to push and shove, he'll get the job done, regardless of tRUMP's damn mouth.
If anyone is a risk for insurrection, it's tRUMP and tRUMP alone. I'm surprised (not really) that he hasn't been hauled off to the funny farm or equivalent, but being an ex-president does have its benefits, so he's been given a lot of latitude. Just how much latitude, how much leeway will he be given? Who knows?
I wonder what will happen when tRUMP finally (IMHO) gives the word to his thugs to attack, and other acts of violence? To be honest, I'm surprised that he hasn't yet again done this. It's just a matter of time before he goes off on the deep end again, mouths off.

(22,129 posts)I remember when 1/6/21 happened, everyone was like 'what?', 'what the heck?', shocked, disturbed, and repelled, and angry (I was). Did these people forget how shocked the Country was after this?
I think if they did this a 2nd time around (another 1-6-21 thing), that they would be slammed to the ground so fast by the rest of us and put in their place instead of the long-drawn out legal process that so many of the original 1/6/21 rioters are going through now w/ the Courts, legal system for obstruction of justice, interfering w/ a government function, conspiracy and/or sedition, etc.
Now that we've seen them and what they are fully capable of doing, killing people, hurting people, damaging property, invading government facilities all in an attempt to change a legal and fair election win, I'm not so friendly to these thugs who treat our votes so cheaply.
