Related: About this forumThe mystery of the seizure and subsequent return of Donald Trump's passports- solved? - Kirschner
Over the course of less than 24 hours, we were told by former president Donald Trump that the FBI took his passports during their search of his Florida home at Mar-a-Lago, followed by some indication that the FBI was denying that they had his passports, and finally, a DOJ official indicated that they did take Trump's passports but that they were being returned. What to make of all this?
It actually makes some sense given the scope of what agents are generally authorized to seize during the execution of a search warrant. This video provides an explainer. - Glenn Kirschner - 08/16/2022.

(4,245 posts)mistake to give him his passports. Although he's not indicted yet it is most certainly the fact that at the least he is a material witness to a crime. Given his history of non-compliance with the rule of law, his close affiliations with our enemies (both foreign and domestic) and his assets he is a high risk to flee and purposely make himself unavailable for questioning as a material witness.

two expired due to "old age"; the other was only valid during his presidency.

(47,107 posts)In any raid, the FBI may seize identifying information of persons who may own or have had in their possession evidence of a crime.
So for example if they found a box of classified documents and Trump's passports were also there, that would indicate Trump had possession of those documents, even though he was not caught with the evidence in his hands.
The FBI would document and take pictures I assume and then return the passports.

(205,405 posts)He still retains his "diplomatic" passport which was only valid when he was in office - a diplomatic passport is only to be used when traveling on official government business. Not to mention, with all his talk of his plane, there has been talk that he could attempt to flee the country rather than face the serious legal consequences which are mounting every day - numerous federal charges, those in New York (where he "took the Fifth" 440 times) and he's still facing more in Georgia.

(205,405 posts)Not just that he's recognizable worldwide now, but what would he do without the attention and his "rallies" where the deluded will pay to listen to his complaints...

(60,334 posts)A passport would refer to a valid document which served as a form identification recognized around the world.
An expired passport is simply a book of stamps to recall the places you have been.
