(16,248 posts)Last night, Alex Wagner had a great segment on teachers in Florida n the governors indoctrination lessons. I grew up in public schools..Dade county 1-12. My mom graduated Miami High in 42...we are all products of public schools n it will soon be just a memory as the GOP cant wait to dismantle our education system. Im watching this disaster in real time n its painful not only here but across other states, too. All I can do is vote n hope.

(205,492 posts)At the beginning of elementary school, we said the "school prayer" along with the Pledge of Allegiance. All I can remember from those early years was that it ended with "our parents, our teachers and our country." But then that was abruptly eliminated, no prayer in schools which makes sense, but we were confused. For awhile one student was chosen to time a "moment of silence" when we were supposed to "pray for ourselves" if we wanted to - and then that was eliminated, too, and no one missed it or thought about it again.
I can remember the teacher in 9th grade Social Studies teaching about the Civil Rights movement and some Civics, and 10th grade was World History - we learned about the World Wars, what caused them and, of course, Hitler. How can anyone's education be complete without learning these essential lessons?? I also found last night's report very disturbing.
Here's the entire series if you missed any of it:

The Army determined that Jesse D. Thorsen violated policies that bar soldiers from participating in political events in their official capacities or while in uniform. Experts say a reprimand may become a problem if Thorsen seeks a promotion or could be used to justify more serious punishment if he gets in trouble again

(205,492 posts)I went to a political event back in 2006 where President Clinton spoke to endorse our Democratic Congressional candidate - and of course there was record turnout in this little burg to see and hear a former president! And I remember a WWII vet there, not in uniform, but wearing an identifying hat and many spoke to him, thanking him for his service. So I guess this is now prohibited??

(205,492 posts)And no doubt wore the hat because he was proud of his service - and likely showed up like the rest of us did, it was pretty exciting to see a former POTUS!
As for sending vets to teach school, I certainly agree that this is a terrible idea unless they were trained as teachers. Though it would have been appropriate if a WWII vet had come in to 10th grade World History to share his experiences as opposed to us reading about the war in books.
As for police officers, Mary Trump talks about that in her second book. She chronicles instances of law enforcement being deployed to schools, in the wake of mass shootings, for "protection." But she said that this eventually morphed into these officers serving as disciplinarians in schools - children as young as preschool students were actually suspended for "crimes" like missing classes or "talking back." And those students who were targeted were often those in minority groups. This set a terrible precedent.
